It's another Long Week Tuesday. It's like a new tradition, or something. My mom, as we know, has panic attacks and high blood pressure and menopause. Also she thinks she should be doing fifty things at any given point in time. It's driving merely nearly as crazy as it's driving her.My father is in the middle of a horribly overbooked year, with commitments to faculty government sorts of things, local historical projects, the synod, whatever they call the state historians association, church council, bell choir, band, and a normal course load that just got more crowded. This past weekend he got sick and missed some of those commitments. We suspect allergies and stress. He's even less able than my mother to deal with teenage son issues. With Sam it starts to get complicated (as if it wasn't already). The last, however, dates back to when he ran his car into a tree during spring break. He was sure we were overreacting when Mom and I thought he should get it looked at. Last week he conceeded possible injury after falling on it. The doctor said you can't break a bone that way without the kind of inpact from the airbag, as opposed to falling.Which naturally doesn't make him any more inclined to listen to me than he was before (nevermind that only one of us has first aid certification). (I have in fact been correct on every medical issue we've disagreed on.) We're going to have an interesting time tomorrow. But I'm getting ahead of myself. The doctor sent him to a specialist to see what could be done, which took about five minutes because all he could do was refer the whole thing to a surgeon. Apparently that's what you have to do with hands. So, Dad took him to see the surgeon this morning, and an hour later he was in surgery. This was unexpected. It also took all afternoon, and drove my mother crazy. (She Had to Be There.) So, right now Sam has a metal plate in his hand (presumably a small one) and his arm is wrapped from elbow to fingertips. He hasn't quite grasped yet that a person on that much pain medication is unlikely to be thinking properly, and he resents any implication that he might not be.I am elected to stay home with him tomorrow. I doubt he'll admit that he needs or wants anything. The surgeon tells us that it went extremely well. Thoughts and prayers would be appreicated, however. He needs that hand rather badly. ~Erin, 5:04 PM Comments: Post a Comment
