Salli's Messy Little Blog (Guaranteed 100% Non-allergenic)

Oh, what the heck.
Meet a very young Verynn Tyrell. (I've never worked with her this young, but I just had to try her, and this is what came of it.) She's from one of my favorite (but woefully under-developed) worlds. Twinkle, twinkle, little star...

In Verynn's society, men and women's magic is entirely segregated. The magicians—who are exclusively male—use high magic, and have an elaborate heirarchy. Women use an herbal, earthy sort of magic, associated with healing. The magicians feel that their magic is obviously superior (in most cases, it is more powerful) and proper. Healers (and a few earth mages) think the magicians are silly old men doing flashly spells up in their towers. Each sex feels that only it is suitable for its type of magic, so this segregation bothers few and is considered natural.

Master Magician Mendar Tyrell (the highest magician, who has access to huge stores of magic) married late, and didn't have any sons—his only child was a daughter, Verynn. He taught her without mentioning it to the other magicians, and groomed her to take his place. (Because 1- the power flows better to a descendant, 2- if he makes her Master Magician, they're stuck with her, and 3- he doesn't want it to pass to one of those idiots, anyway.)

Here, a very young Verynn has just called her own Master's symbol (there are many Master magicians, under the Master Magician—I know, it's confusing) for the first time. I would say she's somewhere in her teens. The part of story I generally work with begins when she is in her twenties. Now, everyone knows her as Mendar's dutiful little bookworm daughter, but one day she'll be Verynn Silverstar, second in power only to the king.
